Though I love summer, it must be said that this year, summer felt like it was a million years long, with the films falling off in quality precipitously the longer the summer went on. Which is why I am happy that the fall movie season is upon us and if word out of Telluride is anything to go by, this is shaping up to be a doozy. So I decided to take a gander at the fall film slate and see what excited me. So without further ado, here all the fall films I’m most excited for and the empirical reasons why.

Note: I have already seen Kill Your Darlings, which is why it’s not on this list.

1. Foxcatcher: C-Tates + Bennet Miller’s 2/2 effort + Fraiser cinematography + Carrell playing against type
2. 12 Years a Slave: Well regarded source material + Fassy and McQueen together again + Chiwetel in a titanic role
3. Gravity: space + Lubezki cinematography + 90 minute run time (praise Jesus!)
4. August: Osage County: Letts adapting his Pulitzer winning play + the cast + possible two lead campaign
5. The Counselor: Cormac McCarthy screenplay + Cameron Diaz crawling on that car + messy subject matter
6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: No shaky cam + LOVE the books + more epic in scope than 1st film
7. The Wolf of Wall Street: DiCaprio playing dirty + Scorcese + the cast is insane
8. American Hustle: O. Russell is in a groove + Adams and Lawrence vamping it up + my Oscar predictions
9. Saving Mr. Banks: Disney feting Disney + Emma Thompson + Mary Poppins nostalgia
10. Rush: Racing + Hemsworth in playboy mode + Good reviews
