The fourth episode of Girls episode starts with Hannah (Lena Dunham) running late to her meeting that she had with her editor David (John Cameron Mitchell) at Millstreet Press and Hannah asks the receptionist if she can see David, but she tells her that he hasn’t arrived. Then we see everyone is running around and even some people are crying and Hannah is wondering what is happening. The receptionist gets a call and tells Hannah that David is dead.
Quick scene we get with Marnie (Allison Williams) running and working out. We go back to Hannah, who’s with Jessa (Jemima Kirke) talking about her morning and about David dying where it seems Jessa really could care less and goes on this philosophical talk with Hannah about “What if we have already died and haven’t been born yet” In comes Adam (Adam Driver), who looks super happy showing off this framed photograph of Tom Hanks (love how the photo looks like it’s from the Bosom Buddies era since Peter Scolari, who plays Hannah’s dad starred in that show with him). Hannah tells Adam about David dying and he can’t recall who that is (I seriously love Adam), but then sees how Hannah is acting and Adam comforts her. She starts going off about what is going to happen with her E-Book that she was writing and Adam realizes that she really doesn’t feel anything about David’s death he even asks her if she’s feeling anything else than her concern for her E-Book.
More with Hannah and Adam, where Hannah is reading on Gawker that David’s body was found face down on the Hudson River. Adam can’t believe that Hannah is still not feeling any emotion over this and he admits to her that he’s scared what will happen if he were to die and how Hannah would react. He tells Hannah that if she were to die, ” The world would blur, I wouldn’t know what a tree was” she proceeds to tell him why are they arguing over this and that she has to work an extra shift and as she’s leaving tells Adam that she thinks about him dying all the time.
Jessa and Shosh (Zosia Mamet) are talking about if they knew anyone that has died in their lives. Shosh tells her cousin about her high school friend, Kelly and how she died. Jessa tells her about her friend Season that died that she was her favorite friend and that she doesn’t even have a picture of her. Shosh tells her that she visit her grave or contact her mom or her Facebook “In Memoriam” page (Oh Shosh, of course you would).
Hannah is at work talking to Ray (Alex Karpovsky), telling him that she lost a friend and Ray says, “Marnie finally decide to throw in the towel” but Hannah tells him about David. Ray tries comforting her, but notices that Hannah isn’t even sad about it and she even tells him that she feels nothing. Loved this line from Ray to Hannah that she is, “The fat free muffin of sociopathic detachment”
Hannah comes home and sees Laird (Jon Glaser), and tells her that she caught him “spiffing” saying that he thought the walls could use some art. So for like what seems the million time Hannah tells Laird about David’s death, he tries to comfort her, but she says she just feels numb. He says that his whole life has been death…that literally everyone has died and he shows Hannah his pet turtle that is dead inside this bottle. We see Caroline (Gaby Hoffman), Adam’s sister coming down the stairs calls Laird “Odd Face” and says that the dead turtle is beautiful. They do some small talk and Caroline tells Hannah and Laird to follow her.
Jessa is ringing the bell of someone’s house and surprise surprise her “dead” friend Season (Melonie Diaz), comes to the door…she had faked her death. Jessa of course is upset about how her friend could have lied…Jessa tells her that this family she has with her husband and child is not going to work out and storms off angry.
Marnie is at work and hears her YouTube video of “What I Am” and sees that Ray and Hermie (Colin Quinn) are watching and she gets mad because they think that both of them are making fun of it. Hermie tells her the video is “Bold and a pioneering of self expression” but she gets pissed at both and tells them to screw off saying that she’s tired of working here and that she should be working with fancy people and quits.
Great scene with get of this oddball trio of: Hannah, Laird, and Caroline running around the cemetery. Where Hannah tells Caroline that she fears that Adam will not want to be with her when he realizes that she can’t match his strength of emotion. Caroline tells her the story of her cousin Margaret, and how at the age of 12 died of muscular dystrophy, but that before Adam had taken their cousin to a real high school dance because that’s what she wanted and we see that Laird is crying, but Hannah is asking about the teeny tiny dress that Adam had bought for Margaret and Caroline starts laughing telling Hannah that the story was made up none of it was real and that she was surprised that Hannah didn’t even shed a tear…asking her what is wrong with her. Laird was on a role saying, “Just because it’s fake, doesn’t mean it didn’t feel real”.
Adam is outside sitting on the stairs where Hannah is walking over and sits next to him, she tells him that it takes her a while to process her emotions, that she liked David and felt connected to him she tries to cry, but nothing is working. So then decides to tells Adam the same story that Caroline had told her earlier about cousin Margaret, but now she flips the story and it’s her cousin that died…Adam just listens to her and end of the episode.
-This episode was alright, we had some good moments all coming from Adam Driver…he continues to be amazing, but felt so much was focused on Hannah Hannah Hannah, I know she’s the main character, but it would be nice to see the other Girls and their stories as well.
