This week thanks to HBO GO, we got this Girls episode early and also I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Super Bowl happening tomorrow evening.
We start with Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Adam (Adam Driver) attending David’s funeral, where Hannah is telling Adam that he sure did know a lot of people, as they are walking Hannah looks all excited saying she thinks she just saw Zadie Smith (a British novelist/short story writer). Adam is telling her to calm down because this is a funeral and asking who she knows here, Hannah sees David’s assistant and goes to him and then a woman comes toward them crying, it turns out it’s David’s wife, Annalise (Jennifer Westfeldt). Hannah is shocked of course (as I think we all were) that David had a wife and she even asks Annalise if they lived together romantically. Annalise is curious how Hannah and Adam knew David and Hannah tells her that she was writing her memoir for him. She gets surprised by this and tells Hannah that David would always talk about her and loved her and mentions the Tourette’s and overcoming the obesity, but Annalise has just confused Hannah with another person Paige (oh poor Hannah). Hannah and Adam take their seats and Adam mentions to Hannah that he thought that David was gay, she tells Adam that David had a lot of gay apps on his iPhone and liked to show his ankles a lot, but what does that even mean in this day in age.
Now we are the funeral reception and Adam is telling Hannah that he wants to leave, but she tells him that she is not leaving until she sees Michiko Kakutani (critic for the New York TImes) and locks eyes with her. Adam tells her that he is going to wait in the car, again she spots David’s wife and she apologizes to Hannah for confusing her earlier with another person. Hannah straight out asks her that she thought David was gay…Annalise tells her that he was sometimes gay. They have more small talk, Annalise tells her that she was also writing a book with David, but now since David is dead Millstreet is dropping all of his projects and that shocks Hannah saying, “So my book is dead?” “Do you happen to know another publisher?” (Honestly Hannah not the most appropriate time to be saying these things) Of course Annalise is upset and tells her if she will get the f’ out of here if she gives her the name of another publisher.
Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shosh (Zosia Mamet) are in Shosh’s apartment and Jessa is talking to her telling her about what happened with her friend (from the last episode) and that she can’t believe that her friend had lied to her and faked her death. Shosh tells her, “I totally get that” and Jessa is surprised saying “Excuse me?” Shosh tells her cousin that she doesn’t do anything all day long that she just watches The Forensic Files and tells Jessa that she needs to study for her classes because her recent hijinks have taken a toll on her GPA.
Hannah is on the phone with someone and we hear that Adam and his sister Caroline (Gaby Hoffman) are arguing and goes over to them and is trying to get their attention but nothing is working so she screams saying that she’s had a long day and that she just wants a peaceful house. Adam tells Caroline about upsetting Hannah and then she tells him that actually she has a meeting with a new publisher because they are interested in her book. But proceeds to tell both that she has seen enough Dr. Phil’s and Interventions that they can work this out. So all three sit down together so the siblings can discuss their feelings toward each other. Adam says that Caroline is an evil person who sucks everything metaphorically and that she has no goals in life. Both are trying to remain calm while talking to each other, but we can see that things are starting to escalate. Adam thinks that Hannah is on Caroline’s side, but Hannah tells him whispering “I’m on your side” and Adam tells her why she is whispering when Caroline can hear her (pretty funny scene, love Adam Driver).
Back with Shosh and Jessa they are walking and Shosh asks about what Jessa is smoking and she tells her it’s a space cigarette invented by Stephen Dorff. That it’s made up of water vapor and nicotine, because she’s trying to improve her life. Shosh tells her that she needs to do a little more than smoke Dorff cigarettes. Jessa spots a Help Wanted sign across the street and says that she is going to get that job. It’s a children’s clothing store and Shosh is like I don’t think you should be around close proximity of children saying she has a criminal record (hahaha) Jessa tells her maybe what she needs is a touch of innocence.
Back to Hannah/Adam/Caroline and they are still arguing, Caroline tells her brother that he has been “internally battling a sexual desire for her” well that sets off Adam saying “Holy dogcrap” even Hannah thinks that was weird for her and Caroline says it “correlates to Adam’s romantic interest in you with a repressed fantasy towards me” (freaking Caroline is insane) both siblings start fighting with each other and end up on the couch like little kids and finally the apologize to each other and Hannah is relieved. Marnie (Allison Williams) calls her and wants Hannah to come over because she got this cute kitty from this guy that was giving them away. Hannah tells her she can’t come over and Marnie gets upset telling her that she never can’t anymore and hangs up on Hannah.
We see Hannah waiting for her meeting with the new publisher and in walks in the new publisher (Marsha Stephanie Black) with her assistant Mo (Jon Bass) saying that they love her book and the publisher tells Hannah that she is like a Mindy Kaling (love that mention), though Mindy holds back…so they ask her, “Who is Hannah Horvath?” (a question that seems all too familiar with everyone at some point in their lives). The publisher tells her they don’t do E-Books, but they want to do an actual book and of course this gets Hannah super excited.
Marnie goes to Ray’s apartment (Alex Karpovsky), they have a bit of small talk and Ray is wondering why she’s here and what she wants to talk to him about. She tells him that she came over so he could tell her what is wrong with her because she is trying to take responsibility for what has happened with her life and that he is someone who likes to tell people that all the time. Ray tells her that he feels he is walking into a trap, she tells him it isn’t and this is what she needs. So he goes off and tells her that she is extremely judgmental and when she’s excluded from something she holds a grudge. And the worst kicker he tells her that even when she tries to connect with someone it comes across as phony. Marnie is definitely shocked about hearing this, but Ray tells her that even after all of that he still likes her and that behind it all he thinks that she means well and that she’s a good person. They hug and Ray thinks that maybe he went a little too far and then both look at each other and start kissing and proceed to have sexy times on the table. (Can I just say when I saw this scene I was like finally haha, I am very intrigued by them)
Hannah is walking all happy eating an ice cream cone when she gets a call from her dad (Peter Scolari), he tells her that he is having the day off soaking in some rays and that he had this small procedure nothing to worry about , but gets interrupted because Hannah is so excited to tell him the news of her book deal. Her dad ruins her joy when he tells Hannah that he talked to Cousin Rudy and that Millpress has the rights to her book and she has to wait about 3 years until they release it. He continues by telling her about the small procedure he had which was removing a small mole he had, but Hannah is upset and hangs up on him.
Back to Marnie and Ray and the aftermath of their afternoon delight, they are sitting in the couch drinking water and she’s about to leave when Ray tells her that maybe for the time being they should keep this on the DL aka the Down Low and Marnie tells him, “Go f’ yourself, like I’d advertise this” and leaves. (I am truly going to joy these two)
Hannah is reading about her book rights and what her dad was telling her was truth, she is super upset and Caroline is there with her and telling her that she can write another book with other wonderful memories and Hannah starts yelling at her saying that all her memories where in that E-Book and how she is going to get another 25 years of all these adventures and what if nothing else interesting happens. Hannah gets pissed off at Caroline and tells her if she can try shutting the f’ up and that she is tired of Caroline always being there and to get the f’ out of her house. Hannah walks away and Caroline proceeds to tell her all these explicit bad things.
Last scene we get is of Hannah laying on the couch looking all depressed and Adam comes in the apartment asking her what’s wrong and asking where Caroline is, she tells him that she kicked Caroline out. Adam is surprised and tells Hannah why she did that and she says that Caroline was ruining their lives and Adam is upset now tells Hannah that he was supposed to be taking care of his sister. Saying that it’s his sister and walks out of the apartment leaving Hannah alone.
Really good episode, enjoyed it and love seeing this development with Marnie & Ray…so guys what did you think of this episode? If you have any thoughts or comments…you know what to do below.
