In what seems like a therapy type scenario with Vanessa (Eva Green) and Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) as we start the episode, she is sitting in a chair across from him and Vanessa is telling him “To be beautiful is to be almost dead” Sir Malcolm is asking her if she hears him and tells him she does and then she starts being possessed again and starts telling Sir Malcolm all these sorts of things about him going to a trek somewhere again and leaving, she starts talking as Mina saying that she wants to know about all those other women, because her fat mother wasn’t enough for him, Sir Malcolm is telling her to stop, but possessed Vanessa is getting out of control saying these horrible things and then everything starts flying everywhere around falling and breaking everything. Sembene (Danny Sapani) comes in and slaps the heck out of her twice and knocks her out and carries her away.
Vanessa is now in her room and Victor (Harry Treadaway) and Sir Malcolm are in the room and Victor asks how she is and she responds that she is well, Sir Malcolm leaves the room because Victor is going to do an examination on Vanessa. Victor is checking out her vitals when she starts saying that what happened downstairs she doesn’t remember, that when she goes away she doesn’t know what takes over her. Vanessa touches Victor’s hand and tells him that he has clean hands and if that’s why he is still a virgin or maybe not because you can’t know these things anymore. Vanessa starts mentioning that line from Adonais from Shelley the one Victor had mentioned to Van Helsing in the previous episode, “No more let life divide, what death can join together” Victor freaks out and possessed Vanessa notices it and tells him that and she asks if he is going to do the examination and tells her that it hasn’t even begun and leaves her room.
Sir Malcolm tells Victor that he called Ethan (Josh Hartnett) to help them out. Victor mentions to Sir Malcolm if Vanessa has had any sexual trauma in her life, because he notices that she has this psycho-sexual responsiveness that makes her feel guilt or shame. Victor is looking at Vanessa’s cards on the table and all of a sudden a spider starts crawling from it and then we see literally thousands and thousands of spiders crawling everywhere and falling to the floor. We hear Vanessa scream and making these demon growls from her room. Ethan arrives and Sir Malcolm asks if he brought his weapons and all of them go upstairs. Vanessa tells Ethan that to forgive her for she is not herself. Ethan grabs her hand and tells her how he can help her and all of a sudden she turns into the possessed version of Vanessa and yells at Ethan, “Did you f-him or did he f-you and then she says no he f-ed you didn’t he? (I was like yes! Finally something about what happened with Dorian and Ethan three episodes ago). She starts going on saying if he enjoyed it and that she would be telling Brona, since Brona knows Dorian all too well. All of a sudden Vanessa starts going insane snapping at everyone in the room and she starts yelling in Arabic something and Victor sedates her. When they leave her in the room, downstairs Ethan is drinking and asks Sir Malcolm what is wrong with her and Sir Malcolm tells him that she’s been possessed by the devil in which Ethan says, “F- me” (hahahaha). Sir Malcolm starts talking about the goddess Amunet and if she takes over Vanessa it will unleash all the untold horrors. Ethan wants to know what the plan is and Sir Malcolm tells him to keep her alive, while she fights this thing inside her. Ethan suggests if they should get a priest, but Sir Malcolm says no that only them will be there for her that he doesn’t want to bring other outside sources and Ethan wants to know if Sir Malcolm knows what she was saying in Arabic and he tells Ethan that Vanessa was saying, “Let me die”
We keep hearing Vanessa shouting and then the group is holding her down and sedating her, we keep getting repetitive scenes of day and night with everyone helping and everyone being so tired. Vanessa is in her bed and wakes up and Ethan is right there, she asks him how long she’s been asleep he tells her that it’s been a week or so that she has been asleep give and take the times she’s woken up possessed. Vanessa tells Ethan that the way her body feels is like scratching that is is hard to describe, but it feels like an animal scratching to get out of her body. Vanessa tells him that she doesn’t remember the things she done, but some things she does and she tells him that he’s been kind to her. That she might have fallen in love with him and Ethan tells her you still might. Vanessa tells Ethan that when the moment comes to look into her eyes and to pull the trigger. Ethan starts telling her if she doesn’t recognize her old friend and we see Ethan with black demon eyes and Vanessa tells him that she will never surrender to him. The Devil tells her that she cannot resist him forever and that he wants her to be the mother of evil at his side, together so they can conquer God…they kiss and they both hold each other.
Downstairs Sir Malcolm is asking Ethan if he still wants to come to Africa with him, he tells Ethan that he must go back to Africa because that is where he buried his son and needs to get him back over here. Vanessa screams and all of them go running to her room where she is scratching at the walls and there is blood all over and then she starts scratching herself (man this was hard to watch) and Victor sedates her. Back downstairs, Victor is injecting himself with morphine telling Sir Malcolm that this addiction has been caused by pain. Sir Malcolm tells him that it’s him turn to look after Vanessa and leaves. Victor is looking out the window and he sees The Creature (Rory Kinnear) across from him just looking at Victor (like does he freaking follow him everywhere, he’s that desperate for his bride I suppose). Ethan walks in and starts talking to Victor and Victor is telling Ethan that he will give Vanessa a transfusion and some vitamins to keep her alive, but he also tells Ethan that they might have to let her go. Ethan tells Victor that he doesn’t think that Sir Malcolm is being honest about Vanessa and the reason why that he wants her to live. Ethan starts telling Victor about the Native Americans and how some of their children got taken given new names and taught in schools and then these children would return and were not welcome by their tribe anymore that they became the unwelcome and they would roam around and just die. Victor looks out the window again and sees The Creature and tells Ethan that it’s snowing and if he could ask him for a favor, he wants him to teach him how to shoot a gun. We get a scene with Ethan teaching Victor how to shoot and Ethan then starts shooting all the bottles they have across, Sembene comes downstairs and tells them that Sir Malcolm wants to know what’s all this noise they are making, Ethan tells Victor, “We’re in trouble with dad” (that was cute and I laughed).
Again we hear the screams of Vanessa and now they have tied her up and we see how everyone is so frustrated with the situation. Sembene is sitting outside of Vanessa’s room and Ethan brings him some food. Ethan asks him what his story is and Sembene tells him that he has no story. Ethan doesn’t believe him and he has a theory that Sir Malcolm saved his life and that now Sembene owes him or that Sembene saved Sir Malcolm’s life and now he stays with him because now it’s his responsibility.
Sir Malcolm is with Vanessa in her room and he’s asking her if she can hear him and she says yes, he tells Vanessa that she can help them in a very special place as in our Mina. Because they must find her, Vanessa realizes what Sir Malcolm has been doing that he’s been letting this continue happening because all he wants is to find Mina and she starts crying telling him how cruel he is, Sir Malcolm is telling her to find Mina at this point Ethan comes walking in and tells Sir Malcolm to get the f- way from her, that she’s dying and to stop all this. Victor yells at Sir Malcolm and tells him, “This is what happens when you murder your way across the continent” everyone is fighting with each other…when Ethan yells at Sir Malcolm and tells him that Vanessa is not a monster with fangs that they can just kill, he yells, “You want a daughter? There she is” Sir Malcolm then tells them to get a priest and prepares to leave when Ethan says that if Sir Malcolm tries to manipulate her in any way that he swears that he will rip out his throat (I’m having Teen Wolf flashbacks here). Sir Malcolm tells Victor that he needs something to stay awake and Victor gives him what is a cocaine derivative. He starts telling Victor about how his son Peter wanted Sir Malcolm to name a mountain after him, but Sir Malcolm tells him that he wasn’t thinking of Peter when he named the mountain that he was only thinking of himself, he tells Victor that he doesn’t have a shred of decency left in him. The priest arrives called Father Matthew and they are telling him about Vanessa and that he needs to perform an exorcism, but says he can’t do that and Victor proceeds to tell the priest to screw off (Victor please!).
In what seems like a scene from The Exorcist, where Vanessa is all tied up and growling in a demonic manner, Father Matthew wants to leave as soon as he sees her but they tell him to do what he’s here for. Father Matthew tells Vanessa if she understands his words and that he is here for unction and for her to make a confession. Vanessa tells the priest that she remembers someone also named Matthew that tortured her with water too and all of a sudden she bites the priest on the cheek and gets out of the restraints and starts going after everyone all crazed. Ethan grabs a hold of her and she starts sobbing and tells Ethan that she begs of him to do it now to please shoot her. He grabs his gun and it’s pointed at her chest, but all of a sudden he starts chanting in Latin and is starting to perform an exorcism on her (I’m just like what is going on, since when is Ethan the resident expert on exorcisms) this scene was just insane because of Ethan chanting exorcising the demon and possessed Vanessa trying to fight it, but in the end Ethan exorcises the demon out of her and she falls to the ground. Ethan leaves the house. Vanessa is dreaming and we keep seeing all these flashbacks of Mina, and also the theater and these lines keep repeating in her head, “There cannot be a happy end for claw will slash and tooth will rend” Sir Malcolm is downstairs when Vanessa appears and she tells him that she knows where Mina is.
This episode was quite something, really enjoyed it and Eva Green continues to shine…man what a performance in this episode. Now I’m wondering what is going on with Ethan because all of a sudden he can exorcise demons? Like I need to know more about this character like now. Also I really hope that we find out more about Sembene because we all know he has a story and I want to know, maybe next season. And I continue enjoying Victor because he’s so tragic and I just want to see more of his story. So next week is the season finale, can’t believe it’s over so soon. But from the preview it looks like it will be quite the episode in the search for Mina and also will The Creature finally get his bride? We shall see next week.
