Two books that couldn’t be further from each other in terms of subject matter and genre feature in this new update to Le Noir Auteur Reads. First up is a jaunt M/M romance and second we have a non-fiction account of the nuclear age.
The Pirate of Fathoms Deep by Megan Derr
The Pirate of Fathoms Deep is one of the jauntier M/M romance books I’ve read. I loved the dynamics of the relationship between Shemal and Lesto and the supporting characters were also a hoot. The reason why this book succeeds is that Megan Derr does such a good job world building and defining the characters that every choice feels earned. Even the ending, which verged a bit on being sappy, felt so euphoric because of what came before.

Almighty: Courage, Resistance, and Existential Peril in the Nuclear Age by Dan Zak
This book with the epically long title was the first non-fiction book that I had read in a long time that felt like a fictional story, which is a credit to Dan Zak’s inspired writing. Each new character introduction and shift between the past and the present made this book feel more the the peeling of an onion, which each layer revealing something new about what is one of the biggest issues of our time. I like that the book too the time to explain some of the fundamentals and origins of nuclear weapons and energy, while weaving it so tightly with the lives of those who participated and were affected by this arms race.
Almighty is available to purchase on July 12.
