One of the biggest surprises for me during the last TV season was Lucifer. The Fox drama seemed so dumb to me last time I went to Comic Con, but thanks to the magic of being able to binge watch the show via Hulu, I actually found it quite good and it ended up making it into my TV drama nominees. So I was very geeked for the Comic Con panel.
Oh, Mother!
Yes, I’m starting with this because it was the biggest reveal. In the finale Lucifer’s mom has broken out of hell, much to the chagrin (horror?) of Lucifer and Amenadiel. The show runners revealed that very early on they knew that this would be the finale moment of the season and it would drive the second season. Enter in Tricia Helfer as the woman/celestial being that gave birth to the duo. There wasn’t much footage of her in the sizzle reel we saw for the second season but we found out that Mom actually provides a different energy in that according to star Tom Ellis, she makes the formidable characters seem less so because of the fact that people act differently when they are around their parents. Tricia remarked that it has been fun getting to play this character because she got individual scenes with Ellis and D.B. Woodside before the group stuff allowing her to find the character. One cool tidbit we got was that Mom and Maize have some “history” as Maize was the prime torturer of hell and given where Mom was locked up…
New Stuff for Season 2
Season 2 has been dubbed by Lesley-Ann Brandt as the “emancipation of Maize” as we will see that character having free will. This of course might come to the detriment of Lucifer, given that she’s more freely able to act on her own. Also, there’s a new character Ella played by Aimee Garcia who helps inject life into the procedural side of the show as a forensic who has little concept of personal space. She has some interesting interactions with Lucifer given that she’s a woman of faith and doesn’t have God issues. This is inline with what the show runners referred to as a show with a lot of funny jokes (many of the sexual variety) but with a subversive heart. One of my favorite quotes from the panel was that this show is interested in exploring the differences between being human and being mortal, as Lucifer will be spending more time with Chloe, despite the fact she makes him vulnerable. We’re gonna see the show transition Lucifer from a guy on vacation, to someone who is making a home.
