So…how is everyone doing? It certainly has been quite a time in the world and in the industry. I have barely seen any movies and it feels like ages since I’ve written a review, so here’s some of the things that I’ve watched.
Emma – I got a chance to watch this on demand due to theaters being closed, and I honestly think it made for perfectly fine home viewing. Anna Taylor-Joy was really great as the title character and the romantic shenanigans and comedy of errors was pleasant enough to watch. It’s not fair to compare mediums, but I do think the miniseries with Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller did a better job at selling the friendship and acquaintance of Knightley and Emma, and therefore is the superior version of the story. But this movie is still gorgeous and well made enough to satisfy Austenites.
Superman: Red Son – WB Animation consistently knocks it out of the park with their films and Superman: Red Son is no exception. Not only is this a good film, it’s also a superlative adaptation of the source material, being both more brutal and less foolish than the (very good) comic it is based on. I loved getting to experience my favorite hero in a completely different way.
The Banker: This movie had to bow out of AFI Fest due to some controversy and honestly that was probably for the best as this movie would have gotten hammered. This movie has lots of talented actors doing servicable work but never gets off the ground to be anything more than a slog.
Sonic the Hedgehog: I saw this movie in early Feb and decided to rewatch it. The movie is still just as delightful and slight as it was the first time. This is a movie that’s expressly built for children but it had enough nostalgia, visual wonder, and a fun performance by Jim Carey that it manages to elevate past that. It might be the perfect quarantine watch cause you’ll find yourself hardpressed to not smile while watching.
