Welcome to the new series Movies to Watch For! I figured that since I’ve spent countless hours of my life obsessing over the Oscars I should probably start focusing on the new movies this year. So over the next few weeks you will see posts about the new films I think you should watch out for (whether good or bad).

John Carter dir. Andrew Stanton (Mar 9)
The Scoop: It’s Pixars first forray into live action films and based on a classic novel with Tim Riggins Taylor Kitsch in the lead role. However, with the lackluster promotional campaign and less than stellar reviews, will this be the first major flop of the year?

Friends with Kids dir. Jennifer Westfelt (Mar. 9)
The Scoop: This movie looks genuinely funny and the cast Westfelt assembled for her debut is great: Megan Fox, Kristen Wiig, Chris O’Dowd, Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, and her longtime boo Jon Hamm.

Silent House (Mar 9)
The Scoop: It’s a remake of a Spanish horror film reportedly filmed in one continuous take. They already had me with the concept but having Elizabeth Olsen in the central role makes this even more of a film to watch for.

21 Jump Street (Mar 16)
The Scoop: Newly minted Oscar Nominee (ugh) Jonah Hill and recent box office champ Channing Tatum team up for this buddy cop comedy remake. Love the supporting cast (Ice Cube, Jake M. Johnson, Dave Franco)

Casa de Mi Padre (Mar 16)
The Scoop: Will Ferrell speaking Spanish in a telenovela spoof with Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna? Um yes please!

The Hunger Games, Gary Ross (March 23)
The Scoop: It’s perhaps the best young adult series I’ve read this side of Harry Potter and the cast is fantastic. Every trailer has looked amazing…I can’t lie I’m so emotionally attached to the books that even if everything looked awful I’d still be there opening night.

Mirror Mirror, Tarsem Singh (Mar 30)
The Scoop: Sigh…oh the promise this one had with its phenomenal cast and visionary director, until they decided to make it an extremely kiddie movie with lack luster promotional material. Being first in the Snow White race won’t help it beat the summer blockbuster version….

Wrath of the Titans (Mar 30)
The Scoop: Boy does this movie look bad. The first film was average at best and to make a sequel with more CGI elements AND the director of Battle: Los Angeles (one of the worst films EVER made)…not a good prognosis.

Titanic 3D (April 4)
The Scoop: James Cameron’s epic is back to conquer box offices again, this time in 3D. This movie still holds up well and it should be an incredible experience to see it in another dimension.

American Reunion (April 6)
The Scoop: After a gazillion direct to DVD sequels, the original gang is back. I have a feeling this movie won’t be funny but that original film holds such weight I have to see this new one.

Cabin in the Woods, Drew Goddard (April 13)
The Scoop: How did a movie with such great young talent and a Whedon script languish for so long? Anyways this looks to be a fun subversive horror film with a game cast (Chris Hemsworth pre Thor!)
