Here’s part 2 of my Movies to Watch For. This summer is shaping out to be pretty interesting in terms of movies huh?
The Avengers, Joss Whedon (May 4)
The Scoop: All of Marvel’s greatest characters and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s mastermind join forces in the first big blockbuster movie of th season. The newly released trailer looked amazing and hinted at possible extraterrestrial involvement…
Dark Shadows, Tim Burton (May 11)
The Scoop: It’s Tim Burton and Johnny Depp remaking an old TV show which could have some promise, but Eyesore in Wonderland is tough to divorce from the duo…plus, where’s the trailer???
The Dictator, Larry Charles (May 11)
The Scoop: After dumping Kim Jong-Il’s ashes on Ryan Seacrest, will this movie live up to that comedic gold moment? Probably not.
Battleship, Peter Berg (May 18)
The Scoop: Well I assume if you like the board game and CGI fest with your blockbusters you will be excited for this…but this just looks like Transformers: Battle of the Sea even down to specific beats in the trailer.
What to Expect When You’re Expecting (May 18)
The Scoop: Despite the cavalcade of my favorite stars in this movie, I refuse to see anything that tries to use the Valentine’s Day/New Year’s Eve formula of bs and add to the mix people trying to get pregnant.
Men in Black III (May 25)
The Scoop: Aside from the cast…this movie doesn’t look set to be very good. They were writing the script while filming the movie, had numerous delays, and only on (average) trailer to promote it…
Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson (May 25)
The Scoop: I was very intrigued by the trailer and Wes Anderson’s style is definitely refreshing. The cast with Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Sinwton and Edward Norton look like they are having so much fun, I’m sure we will too.
Snow White and The Huntsman, Rupert Sanders (June 1)
The Scoop: It’s a revisionist tale of Snow White but with a more epic vibe than that movie coming out in March. I mean have you seen the trailer? Charlize looks to be deliciously evil as the Evil Queen and her alone would be price of admission but Hemsworth and Stewart too?
Prometheus, Ridley Scott (June 8)
The Scoop: It’s Ridley Scott returning to his sci-fi roots in a film that may or may not be linked to his Alien film. Um, hell yes please. The cast is phenomenal and the trailer they released was fantastic…
Rock of Ages, Adam Shankman (June 15)
The Scoop: It’s based on a hit Broadway musical filled with famous 80s rock songs directed by a man who understands how to make a musical. And perhaps best, Tom Cruise! As an aging rocker with tattoos!
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Timur Bekmambetov (June 22)
The Scoop: It’s an adaptation of the genre mashup book that’s caught the world by storm starring some great young talent in Ben Walker and Anthony Mackie. Can Timur pull another Wanted out of his hat with this?
Brave, Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman (June 22)
The Scoop: It’s Pixar so that means odds are it will be a good movie. Plus it’s their first crack at a female protagonist, something worth going to see for that alone.
Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh (June 29)
The Scoop: Male Strippers played by some of my favorite actors+a story based off of Channing Tatum’s past+Soderbergh=MUST SEE. I mean this could either be good or so bad it’s good…either of which is fine.
G.I. Joe: Retalliaton (June 29)
The Scoop: It looks better than the original (that’s not saying much) and might just be a fun pop corn movie to take in if it’s really hot outside.
The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb (July 3)
The Scoop: Spidey swings back into theaters with some new actors and a new villain (The Lizzard). The POV shots in the first trailer looked fun but will the rest of the movie hold up?
Savages, Oliver Stone (July 6)
The Scoop: An all-star cast and an Academy Award winning director take on the story of a Mexican drug cartel that kidnaps two enterprising pot dealers’ girl. I hear Salma Hayek is playing a villain in this movie as well..how fun.
Ted, Seth McFarlane (July 13)
The Scoop: So let me get this straight, the creator of Family Guy is directing a movie about a Teddy Bear come to life? ANd it’s rated R? Sounds like a fun time at the movies…
The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan (July 20)
The Scoop: It’s the final film in the wildly successful Nolan era of Batman. All the familiar players are back with some new blood in Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, but will this movie fall into the trilogy curse? Hopefully not, I’m very excited to see this film.
The Marriage Counselor, Tyler Perry (July 27)
The Scoop: Tyler’s best movies are always non-Madea related. It has an interesting cast (Jurnee Smollett, Vanessa Williams, and Kim Kardashian (!)) and that alone makes it worth paying attention to.
The Bourne Legacy, Tony Gilroy (Aug 3)
The Scoop: The 4th film in this great franchise turns to new franchise man Jeremy Renner to keep everything moving. The trailer was interesting but I’m experiencing franchise fatigue…
Total Recall, Len Wiseman (Aug 3)
The Scoop: It’s a remake (boo!) starring Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston (yay!) directed by the guy who helmed some of the Underworld films (um…). Is anyone really excited about this movie? Do we even care?
Sparkle, Salim Akil (Aug 10)
The Scoop: It’s Whitney Houston’s final film and a remake of one of the more popular Black films. I’m excited to see Jordin Sparks take a crack at acting in a movie.
ParaNorman, Chris Butler & Sam Fell (Aug 17)
The Scoop: This movie reminds me of Nightmare Before Christmas as it centers around a male protagonist with dary and scary overtones. A boy that talks to the dead sounds like an interesting premise for an animated film.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Peter Hedges (Aug 17)
The Scoop: This looks like a quirky family film with some heart. I really liked the trailer and seeing Joel Edgerton in a more empathetic role could be great.
Wettest County, John Hillcoat (Aug 31)
The Scoop: Will this film be considered the first “Oscar contender” of the year? It’s a Depression era tale about bootleggers with some rising young actors. But it has been delayed for a while…
