This headline is a bit misleading as I don’t think one of these three is good, bad, and ugly, but such is the nature of the English language. I’ve been a bit slow on the uptake with these awards since they seem to be coming out every two seconds so I’ve decided to do a good, bad, and ugly on three major groups: the Gotham Awards, the Satellite Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle.
The Gotham Awards – List of Winners
The Good: Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan picking up prizes for Fruitvale Station. I hope the two see some more recognition throughout the awards season.
The Bad: 12 Years a Slave getting shut out. This isn’t necessarily a HOW DARE THEY bad but more of a shocking one. Doesn’t bode well if the indie awards aren’t bowing down to this movie that everyone thinks is getting Best Picture.
The Ugly: The fact that no one would be quiet during the speeches or Lee Daniels tribute to Forrest Whitaker. Just raggedy behavior.
The Satellite Award Nominations
The Good: It’s so wonderful to have award shows that go their own way and there are some cray bonk (crazy bonkers) choices here in both TV and movies. If you want to stand out, choose interesting nominees
The Bad: Can you PLEASE get a set number of nominees? Why do these categories range from like 5-8 nominees? That’s craziness, just pick a set number and go on with life.
The Bad: I’m sure by now you’ve heard that voters for the Satellites had not seen The Wolf of Wall Street before handing it 5 nominations. That is an EGREGIOUS mistake and renders the credibility of the organization null and void. Which is sad cause the nominees are interesting.
The New York Film Critics Circle – Full List of Winners
The Good: Steve McQueen becoming the first Black man to win Best Director. Looking forward to him to picking up more wins.
The Bad: The Wind Rises for Best Animated Feature. Not with Frozen out there should you fall for Myazaki.
The Ugly: This notion that because Lupita lost to Jennifer that somehow the NYFCC was exercising white dominance or being racist by not giving 12 Years more wins. Like what? I understand that this is the “year of the Black film” but COME ON. 12 Years not winning awards doesn’t validate the film nor does it mean groups are being racist for not voting for it. Also, is it that important that it win every damn award throughout the season?
